Greene: Cab startup getting burned

Lisa Reynolds-Nixon stood at East 10th Avenue and Lincoln Street longer than it took to get sunburn before she gave up trying to hail a cab.
"What's wrong with this city? Don't you people have taxis?" asked the skin- product rep from Boston who made the mistake of assuming she could make her sales calls in Denver without a car rental.
Red bikes? We've got plenty.
But on a major street just blocks from the state Capitol, the chances of catching a cab, even in broad daylight, are slim.
It seems curious then that a startup deemed operationally and managerially fit for business by state regulators has been denied its application to launch more taxis in Denver and surrounding counties.
Paul Gomez, an administrative law judge for the Public Utilities Commission, ruled this summer that Mile High Cab's proposed fleet of 150 would harm existing companies' business and "impede the ability of those carriers to provide safe, economical and efficient service."
"When a market is at or near capacity, a homogenous, undifferentiated entrant such as Mile High does not serve the public interest," he wrote.
I wonder which members of the public, and exactly whose interest, Gomez had in mind.

Great article. Hancock wants to be mayor and is an enemy of Mile High Cab. Romer wants to be mayor, too, but he helps MIle HIgh.
ReplyDeleteGood Article. Since when did fair competition became bad for business. what happend to the Free market concept. When Paul Gomez said Proposed Mile High Cab will harm existing campanies, does that mean he is advocating for monopoly? or is he protecting existing campanies? Who is he accountable to? I thoght he was for the interest of the people of Denver.
ReplyDeleteFree and Fair compition is what I believe....
Am for healthy competition... Go Mile High Cab
ReplyDeleteKeep on fighting Mile High Cab...
ReplyDeleteWe are with you, don't give up. You are gonna get there
ReplyDeleteMile High Cab is within their legal right to apply for permit, So they should be treated fairly. I mean that is common sense.
ReplyDeleteWe really need a better cab service in town. Yellow and Metro Cab has had the worst service possible. Never on time, their cabs always late. Freedom cab service may not be the best neither but they're decent. Union Cab provide good service to the public as far as I know. their cab is clean and always ontime I've never had a problem.
ReplyDeleteThanks for Denver Post, the article is great. I absolutely supporting Mile High Cab.
We need more cabs in Denver... that's a no brainer. I had to wait freaking 2 hours last night to get picked up from my home in Lakewood... Mile high cab has to be given a chance people... what's wrong with these law makers???
ReplyDeleteHistory show competition is good I do not get why this corrupted Judge do not allow competition. We the public have to do something about this kind judge.
